Reviewer Responsibilities
A useful review helps an editor reach a reasoned decision and helps an author improve the work. Reviewers should give an independent assessment supported by specific observations.
Confidentiality & Unpublished Information
Treat the manuscript, associated files and review correspondence as confidential. Do not distribute them, discuss identifiable details outside the review arrangement or involve another person without the editor’s permission.
Do not use unpublished ideas, findings or data for personal or professional advantage. Keep the review focused on the work and preserve the confidentiality required by double-blind assessment.
Expertise, Conflicts & Timely Review
Accept a review only when you have the relevant expertise and can meet the agreed timeframe. Notify the editor promptly if an unexpected limitation or delay arises.
Disclose financial, institutional, collaborative, competitive or personal interests that could compromise an objective assessment. If such a concern becomes apparent after accepting, contact the editor rather than continuing without disclosure.
Objective Assessment & Constructive Feedback
Evaluate the research question, method or analytical approach, evidence, reasoning, interpretation and contribution. Distinguish essential corrections from suggestions and explain why each significant concern matters.
Use professional language and specific examples. Critique claims and methods rather than the author. Avoid personal criticism, unsupported accusations or requests unrelated to the scholarly quality of the work.
References & Relevant Literature
Identify important omissions or inaccurate representations of relevant literature with sufficient detail for the editor and author to consider them. Recommend citations for scholarly relevance, not to increase personal or journal citation counts.
Check that conclusions are adequately supported and that quotations, sources and reused material are acknowledged. A reviewer need not certify every source but should flag material concerns that become apparent.
Research-Integrity Concerns
Report suspected plagiarism, substantial overlap, unreliable evidence, ethical concerns or other potential misconduct privately to the editor, with clear examples or source information. Do not investigate by contacting the authors or third parties independently of the editorial arrangement.
Keep observations separate from conclusions that require further evidence. The editor is responsible for considering the reports and communicating the editorial outcome.
