How to choose a journal for AI research
Research resources · Quillify Publications · 22 October 2026
Choose a journal by the question your paper answers.
Match the contribution to the readership
Write down your research question, method, main contribution and intended audience. Read the journal's aims and scope and several recent papers. Check whether it accepts your article type. For an interdisciplinary paper, explain why its findings matter to that journal's readers in the cover letter.
Check the evidence behind journal claims
- Confirm the publisher's identity, contact details and editorial responsibilities.
- Read how peer review works and whether reviewers have relevant expertise.
- Check fees, currency, payment timing and any stated waiver policy before submitting.
- Verify any claimed indexing in the named database itself, including the exact journal title and coverage dates.
- Check the publication's preservation, corrections, retraction, copyright and reuse policies.
An ISSN identifies a serial; it is not by itself proof of indexing or research quality. A DOI identifies an object and does not guarantee its validity. Avoid relying on logos or an unexplained “impact factor” claim alone.
What should an AI manuscript explain?
For empirical work, describe the dataset's origin and permissions, the evaluation design, baseline comparisons, limitations and enough methodological detail to make the findings assessable. Explain potential data leakage and the population to which results apply. For conceptual work, identify the evidence and reasoning supporting each conclusion. Requirements vary by field and journal.
Disclose AI assistance according to the journal's policy
Keep a record of tools used, what they assisted with and how the authors checked the output. Verify references against original publications and do not upload confidential data without permission. Ask the journal how it expects relevant assistance to be disclosed; using a tool does not transfer responsibility for accuracy away from the authors.
